Year 3 : Lazy Jack

Lazy Jack

This story:
  • Demands on children's developing vocabulary and their ability to read complex sentences
  • Require reading to be sustained
  • Show how uthors portray characters, setting and plot through dialogue, action and intereaction
  • Include traditional and classis stories and poems
  • Represents a rage of techniques and styles
  • We can a lot of adjetives (personalities)

We can work sentence level firstly with the children doing a craft: Children have to make a nice hat and write on it the main parts of the story

AT THE BEGINNING:
Jack was lazy and rude because he never helped his mother.

LATER:
Jack worked hard in different places because his mother talked him to, so he was obedient and satisfied.

THEN:
Jack was silly and twit because he lost the money and he destroyed all the prizes of his work

AT THE END:
Jack was happy because he got married with the princess and lazy again because he will never work again.

We can help children with different diagrams about the actions or events of the story:

Along this story we will work the adjectives that are related with each character, for example:

  • Princess is sad, lonely and happy
  • Mother´s Jack is bad-tempered and bossy
  • Jack is lazy, happy and twit.
  • We can work this using a binary key

We can help students with diagrams of the main characters like this one:

With Lazy Jack we can work sentence level too, using pictures, common words and specific words of the story, we can take adjectives that children use in the daily life. We will be able to give them examples in case that they don´t understand any word.

With this picture we can help students to form sentences about Jack:

And finally we can make a drama, and each groups of students have to choose one scene of the story and represent it:
