Year 6: Kensuke's Kingdom

Kensuke's Kingdom

A good choice to work with children in level six class, is Kensuke's Kingdom.
Who wrote this amazing  story about his childhood is Michael Morpurgo.

Michael's father loses his job at the brickworks and his parents decide to sell their house and all their possessions and buy a yacht to sail round the world with all family. The voyage goes well and they visit numerous places but a disaster is closer to Michael. He fell out the boat and hours later Michael awakes to find himself washed up on a desert island. He is exhausted and hungry and thirsty...

If you want to know more...just read the book!

A quietly told story, but plenty of drama and emotion.

How can we work ths story with the children?

1. Time line:

Once everyvody have read the book,  we can make a timeline of the story, there are usuful pages in internet really helpful, I did this one:

Another examples in the web of a timeline:

Or we can use Tripline.net to make a trip around the world:

 2. Talk about the story

With the smartboard or kidspiration children can retell the story and talk about the book:
  • Numerise settings
  • Describe the main characters

  • Do flashcards with the characters and then describe them using the vocabulary pyramid:

  • Work the story through the a map made by the children telling the beggining, middle and end of the story as in the imagen from Constantine Primary School:

Go into the following website, to see how many ways to work this book there are:  http://constantine.cornwall.sch.uk/kensukes-kingdom/

 3. Things we need to survive

It is a good way to make children think and speak in English, with this activity children can learn a lot of vocabulary while they play and enjoy.

First we can do a brainstorming about vocabulary of the things that they think can be useful in a desert Island, and then individually answer the question with the smartboard (children have to choose five objects to put in their bags):

4.Web quest about...:

We can introduce children in other topics as well, using the book to introduce them in history, geography, nature... and if we want, the teacher can do a web quest focus in one of these topics:
  • Napoleon
  • History
  • Nature
  • Geography
  • My own Trip Trave around the world
For example, children can tell their partners one of their trip (holidays, visit another country..) using tripline.
I made with my own one: My mediterranean cruise:
